LISTEN: The Greatest Game Ever Played Behind Barbed Wire
Enjoy a read-aloud version of our latest Deep Dive—the Grand Prize winner of the 2023 Narratively Profile Prize, and one of our favorite stories we've ever published.
Hey, it’s Brendan, Narratively Co-Founder and Editorial Director. OK, I know we send ya’ll stories all the time and we really do love every one of them. But I have to take an extra moment today to unabashedly plug our most recent Deep Dive, which you can now listen to! I’m so glad the guest judges for our inaugural Narratively Profile Prize chose Lisa Heyamoto’s riveting saga about a little known but massively significant high school baseball game played in a WWII internment camp. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this story since the first time I read it, and it’s been amazing to see the reactions pouring in from Narratively readers around the world who are equally blown away. (BTW I am so not a sports guy so if you’ve been hesitating to read this one because you aren’t either, heads-up that you don’t need to know a single thing about baseball to appreciate this gripping human story.) If you only have time to check out one Narratively story right now, I strongly suggest you make it this one. And, if you don’t have time to read, you can always listen!
If you’re not already aware, Narratively Out Loud is our original podcast featuring professional voice actors reading each new Narratively story aloud. If you’re a paid Narratively subscriber, you’ll find the audio version of Lisa’s story in the Narratively Out Loud feed and also at the top of the written story.
If you don’t have Narratively Out Loud synched to your favorite podcast player yet, check out our post on how to get that set up here. Happy listening, and thank you as always for your support!
