I’m not going to lie — I’m not a huge sports person. The last time the World Series was majorly on my radar was in 1986 when the Mets won because I lived with a huge fan: my dad. I was just a kid then, but it was a pretty big deal in our household and it stuck with me. The thing I liked about it then, that I’ve appreciated ever since is the excitement events like this create for people, the hope it gives fans and of course the players. I also love the camaraderie and collaboration that goes into being on a team and when you see it at play; when the underdog wins, when they win at the last minute; when it all comes down to the finish line like this, the best playing the best. (Wait, why am I not a sports fan?) The stories below are all inspirational or fascinating in different ways, encapsulating the best of what I think sports can be and do and shedding light on pieces of our history that have been glossed over or largely unknown.
