Hello Kerra, Thanks for posting your journey. Congratulations on pushing through and finding a path, perhaps even more inspiring, from your trip to Morocco and subsequent recognition for your documentary film. I also want to let you know that I too took your course on writing with our ancestors and Abeer's course that you mention. Both set me off on a journey I could never have imagined that would be so fruitful. I now am part of a bi-weekly writing group that includes writers from your course last year. We hail from Indonesia, Luxembourg and three states in the USA. We have met and written with and for each other consistently over the last 6 months. From Abeer I got so much validation and a sense of self-worth, courage and also some very practical support, information and tons of resources. Thanks to you both!
Hello Patricia! Thank you so much for this beautiful note — I’m deeply moved to hear how both classes sparked something lasting for you. It’s incredible to know the writing group is still going strong across continents and time zones! That kind of sustained creative connection is exactly what I hope these courses can help build. And I completely agree — Abeer's class is a gift. I’m so glad you found both inspiration and practical tools. Keep going — your story clearly has many chapters ahead. 💫
Thank you for this post and for revising my thinking about grants and scholarships as ways we invest in our writing. I still wonder, it seems that emerging writers who are awarded these have published. If not books, they have already had some success in publishing in journals, etc. Does anyone know if that's an accurate observation?
It’s about finding the right opportunities. Study who the past grantees were. If none of them have backgrounds similar to yours, consider whether it’s the right opportunity for you. For example, if I apply for a writing grant and most of the previous award winners have MFAs, it’s not the right match for me.

Thanks for sharing! As an editor with a 20+-year career, I so resonate with lots of making room for others’ stories. Way to go on making the shirt. ♥️
*shift, not shirt 😁
Thank you! I decided if not now, when?
