In a previous, pre-Narratively (and pre-kids) life, I spent most of my time as a travel writer, reporting from Mozambique to Manila for The New York Times, The Washington Post and many other publications. In recent years, the writing community has had a lot of important conversations about travel writing — especially as over-tourism has started to threaten many of the world’s most popular destinations, and as we’ve all become a lot more conscious about empowering people to tell their own stories.
I still firmly believe that travel writing has an important place in terms of helping to connect people across the planet. But we need to make sure we do it with consciousness and care. That’s why I’m so excited to have Kerra Bolton teaching The Art and Ethics of Writing Travel Memoir at Narratively Academy this month.
